The Grand Strand airport in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. I've overnighted a few times here and there's plenty to do close by.
This was taken on while stopping over on Hilton Head island to refuel and wait out a line of weather. It's a beautiful place to fly, as long as you pay attention to noise abatement procedures as the locals don't like airplane noise as much as pilots do.
The sign says it all!
The Barnegat Lighthouse with an interesting traffic pattern in the background.
You see NEXRAD radar images all the time, but you've probably never seen the site of the radar from this perspective. The trees are cleared out quite a distance from the radome to help prevent ground clutter.
Looking at the Hudson River closer to New York City. Note that the river is unfrozen here, but covered in ice and snow only 75 miles north.
A panel typical of a 5-year-old Cessna Skyhawk (Model 172), which sports four seats and a 180HP engine. The latest Skyhawks come with full "glass" panels. Cost? About $225K new, but many used examples are available for far less.
Departing from Hagerstown, MD into some deteriorating weather. Notice the darkening skies to the north (where we're headed!). It was a rainy but calm flight home.
One of the more fun approaches, landing runway 2 at Hartford-Brainard in CT brings you very close to the river. The river leads you right to the airport after you break out of the clouds during approaches in bad weather.
